Sporting News Coming from the NBA Plus the UFC Today

Sporting News

What a way to start out the week especially if you’re a sports fan. With so much injustice, tragedy and violence hitting our nation the past week, the news to start the week is all sports related. The first thing I heard this morning was the owners of the UFC agreeing to sale a majority stake in the company. The second thing was the retirement of the “Big Fundamental” Tim Duncan after a very successful 19 years career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs. The final thing that’s making its way around the news was the arrest of Draymond Green in East Lansing on Sunday for assault.

UFC Sold for $4 Billion

While there were rumors for a while that the UFC could be sold, nothing really came about it until today when Dana White confirmed the sale to WME-IMG. This comes off a very successful UFC 200 PPV, which saw the return of Brock Lesnar to the octagon. White and Las Vegas casino magnates, Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, acquired the company for $2 million in 2001. Some 15 years later, the UFC’s popularity is at an all-time high this was a very smart move especially with the huge fight between McGregor & Diaz on August 20th for UFC 202.

Tim Duncan Retires

One of, if not the greatest power forward in the history of the NBA called it quits today after spending 19 years with the San Antonio Spurs. Spending his entire career with the San Antonio Spurs, Duncan won five NBA championships in 19 seasons and was named MVP in 2001-02 and 2002-03 and was the Finals MVP in 1999, 2003 and 2005. With the retirement of Kobe Bryant, Duncan is one of the last guys from my generation that still played in the NBA and now the only guys that I can relate to are Dirk, KG and Vince Carter. Tim Duncan will definitely be a first ballot Hall of Famer five years from now.

Draymond Green Arrested

The final thing was reported that Draymond Green was arrested for assault in East Lansing, Michigan. It has been reported that he slapped someone who was taunting him at a nightclub. His status for the 2016 Olympics is unknown as the investigation is ongoing and we can’t even begin to speculate how this will affect his NBA career.

With all that’s going on today, what’s the biggest news coming out of the sports world today for you? What are your thoughts about the sale of the UFC?
