Now that we’ve reached the Championship round of the playoffs, we’re still having the NFL MVP debate. It seems like everyone has their opinion on who they believe should take home the award. On one hand, we have the usual suspects in Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, who’s been talked about. Then we have guys like Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. For the last few weeks, it seems like it’ll be between Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan are the favorites to win the award. If you watch programs on ESPN, it seems like they’re hell-bent on either Rodgers or Brady winning the award. For the most part, they have tried to find ways to for Ryan not win the award. Being an Eagles fan, I don’t have a dog in the race, and I’ll explain who I believe should win the NFL MVP.
New England finished the regular season with a 14-2 record, which was the best record in the league. Brady missed the first four games of the season due to being suspended. Once he returned, it seemed like he was a man on a mission. He finished the season with over 3500 yards passing, 28 TDs and only 2 INTs. Those are reasons as to why he should be the NFL MVP, but I don’t think he should win it. Tom Brady will go down as probably the greatest QB of all-time when he’s finished, but that doesn’t mean he’s the MVP. First of all, despite having great numbers, he did miss the first quarter of the season and Jimmy Garoppolo put up great numbers in his absence before getting hurt.
When it comes to Aaron Rodgers, I’ve said for the past 7 or 8 years that I think he’s the best QB in the NFL. After his big game against the Cowboys last week, ESPN think he’s not far behind Brady for G.O.A.T status. When Green Bay lost their fourth game in a row, Rodgers said he believed they could run the table. Ever since, Green Bay has won eight games in a row and he didn’t throw an INT until last week. He could very well come out with the award, but I don’t he should win it this year. He had an unbelievable run the last two months, but the first half of the season the Pack were 4-6. He wasn’t playing at an MVP level and it didn’t seem like Green Bay would even make the playoffs.
Coming into this season, everyone thought Detroit would have an awful season. I mean they lost arguably the best WR in the league in MegaTron to retirement. Instead, Matthew Stafford led them to the playoffs and almost came away with the division title. Stafford enjoyed one of his best overall seasons as he finished with over 4300 yards passing without any running game. Those numbers could’ve been better, but he played the three games with an injury on his throwing hand. Despite having one of his better seasons, most of his really good games came against struggling teams.
Dak Prescott/Ezekiel Elliott
These rookies had a phenomenal season and deserve to be mentioned in the MVP race. Let’s started with Prescott, he lead to the Cowboys to a 13-3 record and those 13 wins are tied with Big Ben for the most wins by a rookie QB. Despite the franchise not fully committing to him until half way through the season, he shined and played great. With Ezekiel Elliott, he led the league in rushing with more than 1600 yards a game. It’s one thing for a RB to have speed or power, but Elliott displayed both throughout the season. As much as I think either one of these guys deserve the award, the offensive line is the real MVP.
The final guy in the MVP discussion is Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan finished the season with almost 5,000 yards passing, 38 TDs and 7 INTs. This season was the 5th year in a row that Ryan has thrown for over 4500 yards. Many people have pointed out how hot Rodgers has been, but Ryan has been just as hot, if not hotter. Ever since Week 12, Ryan leads to the league in total QBR and yards per attempt and ranked second in completion percentage. In the regular season, Ryan had at least 1 TD pass to 13 different players, which is the first in NFL history. When it’s all said and done, I think Matt Ryan should and will win the NFL MVP award. The Pro Writers have already named him the MVP and Offensive Player of the Year.
