Most homeowners would love to have a spacious bathroom. Unfortunately, not every home has the spacious bathroom that the homeowner would like. If you have this problem, you have a few options. You can either sell your home and buy a new one with a bigger bathroom, however, this can be a huge hassle that isn’t worth it just for a bigger bathroom. Second, you can build an addition to your bathroom. If your bathroom is not located in an area where an addition would be possible, this also wouldn’t be a good option. Fortunately, there are ways to make your bathroom look larger by making a few cosmetic changes. You can make it a DIY project and the whole job can cost you under $150.
#1 Stick With Bright Colors
Dark colors tend to make a room look smaller. When choosing your paint colors, you should stick with bright colors including:
• Pale rose
• Pale blue
You should also paint the walls and ceiling the same color. This is especially important if you have an angled ceiling. When you use the same color on the walls and the ceiling, there won’t be any transitions intersecting. It will create a cleaner, larger look. If you don’t want to go with the exact same color, you can go a shade lighter on the ceiling if it is flat. A gallon of paint will run you about 25.00
#2 Use Beadboard Wall Paneling and Trim Decor
Beadboard paneling is a great way to make a small bathroom look larger. Many homes have this type of paneling on the bottom section of the wall only. To make your bathroom look larger, you should install this paneling from the floor to the ceiling. It will give the room a cleaner, more open look. Also, installing a thin, bright wooden trim at the top of the wall to the ceiling will make the bathroom look larger than it actually is. Best of all, MDF beadboard will run you about ten dollars per sheet.
#3 Use All The Same Tones
If you want to make your bathroom look larger, you should use the same color tone for your walls and your tiles. If you go with dark walls and light tiles, it will basically chop up the space. This will make the room look smaller. If you want to add some contrast to the room, you can add a decorative light fixture or another object that will stand out.
#4 Use Clear Glass Shower Doors
When it comes to your shower, you should use clear glass shower doors. If you go with a shower curtain or a shower door with a dark stain, it will look like a wall, making the bathroom look smaller. If you go with a clear glass shower door, the shower area will look like part of the bathroom, essentially making it look bigger.
#5 Mirrors Are Important
If you are going to make your bathroom look larger, you are going to need mirrors. A mirror above the vanity isn’t going to be enough. Instead, you should install a mirror that goes from the vanity all the way to the ceiling. You should also install a mirror in the space where the vanity meets the wall. This will give the illusion of a much larger space. If possible, you should place your mirrors strategically. For example, if you have a window in your bathroom, you should hang a mirror on the opposite wall. This will give your bathroom the illusion that you have two windows when you actually only have one.
#6 Natural Light Is Important
Most people want privacy in their bathroom, therefore, they will keep a shade or blind up at all times. This will keep the natural light from coming in and making the bathroom look smaller. If you replace your window with a white, tone on tone stained glass window, you will have all the privacy that you need and you will get plenty of natural light.
Power Tools and Hand Tools Necessary For Your DIY Bathroom Remodel
Before you start your remodel, you are going to need the right tools. If you don’t have each of the tools listed in your toolbox, there many hardware stores who rent tools. This can be much cheaper than buying a tool that you may need only once.

• Demolition bars
• Ladder or step stool
• Circular saw
• Electric drill and various drill bits
• Measuring tape
• Table saw
Depending on the amount of work that you are doing, you might not all of the tools listed, however, it is good to have them all on hand just in case. Just because your bathroom is small, it doesn’t have to look small. If you follow the tips listed above, you can have a brighter more open bathroom that looks much larger than it actually is.
