5 Heart-Healthy Family Activities for American Heart Month

For an African American male, heart health is something that’s taken very seriously. As a matter of fact, heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. High blood pressure, obesity and diabetes are the most common conditions that increase the risk of heart disease. One of the things I could change is my diet, but that’s one of the hardest things to do as it’s a work in progress. I’ve tried my best to make my heart healthier without working out, but I don’t think that’s for me. Here are five things that could help you on the journey to a healthier heart.

Take a walk after dinner

Instead of sitting in front of the TV, get in the habit of walking around the neighborhood after the dishes are clean. Not only are you getting exercise as a family, but you can also get to know your neighbors while enjoying fresh air. With so many people that take walks around our neighborhood, this is also a good chance to meet more of our neighbors.

Join Springfree Trampoline’s Community Jump Challenge

Get jumping and that heart pumping! Help the community reach 100,000 jumps to raise $1,000 for the Metro Atlanta American Heart Association by visiting and jumping at Springfree Trampoline’s East Cobb store or Forsyth store.

Sign up for a class

Whether it’s yoga, a tennis lesson or meditation class, studies have shown that family exercise strengthens bonds and muscles. Try something new that the family has never done before so everyone is learning together.

Have a dance party in your living room

Dancing has a wide range of physical and mental benefits including improved heart and lung health, in addition to naturally boosting your mood. Crank up the tunes and blast your favorite music in the living room for an impromptu dance party at home. We all love music in our household, plus the kids get a kick out of seeing their mom and dad dancing.

Host a weekly sports night

Each family member picks a card and performs the exercise pictures. You can make your own or buy a ready-made set of cars from a brand like FitDeck.

These are just five things you can do to attain a healthier heart. Can you add anything to the five activities that’s mentioned above? Do you have any stories about heart-related issues would you like to share? Head to the comments section to give some feedback.
