It’s official! The Virginia Cavaliers will meet the Texas Tech Red Raiders for the 2019 NCAA Championship. Virginia’s championship appearance was a controversial one seeing how their Final Four game ended. Two plays at the end of the game had plenty of people talking. The first being the missed double dribble called on Jerome with less than six seconds left. If that call is made, Auburn would probably be playing for the championship. The other one saw Kyle Guy get fouled while shooting a 3-pointer to end the game. Guy went on to hit all three free throws with 0.6 seconds left. Texas Tech used their smothering defense to put the clamps on Michigan State in the other semifinal game. Despite Culver not having a great game, the Red Raiders advanced to their first championship game. Who will leave Minneapolis as the 2019 NCAA Champion?
The Virginia Cavaliers have been one of the better teams throughout the season. They come into this game with only three losses and two of those came at the hands of Duke. The Cavs possess a great inside and outside game. The guards are clutch and can get hot behind the arc. If you’re thinking of taking your game on the inside, Virginia have two guys that’ll disrupt every shot. When all else fails, they will use their defense to clamp down the opposition. With the close call against Auburn behind them, how will they react in the championship game? Can the Cavaliers complete the turnaround after being the first #1 seed to lose to a 16 seed?
Texas Tech flown under the radar for most of the season. The Red Raiders did win the Big 12 Conference, which ended the 14-year streak of Kansas winning the conference. Robert Culver is projected to be a lottery pick in the upcoming 2019 NBA Draft. For the most part, Culver have been quiet, but his defense has been on point. Throughout the years, I’ve never seen a Tom Izzo coached team look like they couldn’t compete until Texas Tech came along. Honestly, this Texas Tech team kind of mirror the Virginia team. Texas Tech also have a great inside-outside game and the defense is also great. This game has the lowest over/under in the last 20 years and it’s not surprising. Will Culver show up in the biggest game of his career? Who will hoist their first national championship? I’m going with the Red Raiders to edge by Virginia.
