The football season kicked off with a battle of Florida as the Gators beat the Hurricanes in the opener. This is officially Week 1 of the 2019 college football season. With this being Labor Day weekend, games will be played from Thursday to Monday night. As always, the goal is the finish the season with at least a 70% winning percentage. This opening week, we’ll be predicting a total of seven games. The only game between ranked teams will take place in Dallas. The 11th ranked Oregon Ducks will battle the 16th ranked Auburn Tigers.
We kick things off with the only game featuring ranked teams battling against each other. The 11th ranked Oregon Ducks will take on the 16th Auburn Tigers. The game will take place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas and this should be a great game. This game will be huge for the Ducks as they have the Pac-12 conference on their backs. This is a rematch of the 2011 National Championship game, but this will be all about Justin Herbert. Herbert is projected to be a top-10 pick in next year’s NFL Draft, and this could start a Heisman campaign for him. Auburn will have to depend on their stout defense because the Tigers will start a freshman quarterback. The Tigers opened up last season by beating the Huskies, can they beat another Pac-12 school? I’m rolling with the Ducks to beat the Tigers in Dallas.
Oregon Win 27-17
We move on to the Monday night game as the 9th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish visit the Louisville Cardinal. The Fighting Irish will have Ian Book returning under center with an offensive line that should be great. On the other side, the defense is figured to be better also with the hopes of reaching the playoffs. With the Louisville Cardinal, they are still trying to get back to be an elite program. This will be a measuring stick for the Cardinal and this game could be interesting. Louisville is a tough team at home and on Monday night, they could be a tough opponent for Notre Dame. In the end, the Fighting Irish should come away with the win on Labor Day night.
Notre Dame Win 31-20
This is the Sunday night game as the Houston Cougars travel to Oklahoma to face the 4th ranked Sooners. This game will be a battle between two coaches that’s familiar with each other. Dana Holgorsen took over Houston after leaving the West Virginia Mountaineers. After having the last two top picks in the NFL Draft, Oklahoma turn to Jalen Hurts at the quarterback position. As we all know, Hurts left Alabama and will try to be the third consecutive QB from Oklahoma to win the Heisman Trophy. D’Eriq King is one of the more dual threat QBs in the nation will lead the Cougars against the Sooners. With Holgorsen leading the Cougars, how will the Cougar offense look against Oklahoma? Either way, the Sooners should walk away with the win to open the season.
Oklahoma Win 45-24
We have another major game between two teams from different conferences. The Boise State Broncos travel to Jacksonville to battle the Florida State Seminoles. Both of these teams have a lot riding on this game pertaining to their seasons. If Boise State were able to travel cross country and pick up the win, this will be significant. If the Seminoles were to beat the Broncos, this could give them the confidence they need to start rebuilding their program. Can James Blackman make do on his second chance and lead the Seminoles to the victory? I’m going with the Seminoles to edge the Broncos.
Florida State Win 27-24
We have the battle of Utah as their two premier programs do battle in the opener. The 14th ranked Utah Utes will travel and face the BYU Cougars. Coming into this game, Utah is the better team on paper and plus they’re ranked 14th. Seeing that the game is in Provo, the Cougar fans will be loud and there in groves. Utah beat the Cougars in the regular season finale last year. In that game, BYU had a 20-0 lead, but the Utes came back and won 35-27. With this being a new season, BYU is hoping to start things off by beating their rival. Utah have too much fire power and think they will leave with the win on the road.
Utah Win 31-21
The final game of the week will be a battle between the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten. The 25th ranked Stanford Cardinal will host the Northwestern Wildcats. Stanford will have K.J. Costello under center once again for the Cardinal. Stanford should have another tough, hard-nosed defense entering the season. On the offensive side, the Cardinal could surprise some people as I’m thinking they should be ranked higher. Can the Cardinal start the season with a win? Northwestern will have Hunter Johnson under center to start the season. Johnson is a transfer from Clemson and was a highly-rated prospect. Who walks away from the early season match-up between the Cardinal and Wildcats? I’m going with the Cardinal to barely get by the Wildcats.
Stanford Win 23-17
