After college football got off to an exciting start, it’s time for the NFL season to begin. The New England Patriots enter the season as the reigning, defending Super Bowl Champions. In the AFC, there’s quite a few teams that could give the Patriots a run. The Los Angeles Rams are the defending NFC champions and they also will have plenty of contenders for the NFC crown. Like always, our goal is the finish the season with a 70% winning percentage. For the 2019 NFL opening week, we’ll be predicting a total of nine games. Let’s get this started!!
The 2019 NFL opening week starts off with the Thursday night game. The Green Bay Packers will travel to Chicago to face the Bears. Many believe this is the best rivalry in the NFL and what a fantastic way to start off the season. The Packers are hoping that a change in coaching can get them back to their glory days. Green Bay is hoping Coach Matt LaFleur can make Aaron Rodgers great again. Can the Packers upset the Bears on the road? Chicago is hoping to build on their successful season from a year ago. Many thought the Bears were Super Bowl bound, but they lost to the Eagles in the playoffs. The continued growth of Mitchell Trubisky will be key for the Bears success. Can the Bears defense dominate like they did a season ago? I’m rolling with the Chicago Bears to win this opener.
Chicago Win 24-20
This is matchup between two teams that could meet in the playoffs. The Tennessee Titans will travel to Cleveland to face the new-look Browns. The Titans are coming off a very successful season where they went to the playoffs. Tennessee actually won a game last year and they’re hoping to aim a little higher. The Titans will be in a fight in the AFC South as the division is one of the tougher ones. With Cleveland, they have been the talk of the NFL. While trading for Odell Beckham Jr. was the news grabber, the Browns made several great moves. The Browns offense should be great, and they’ll get Kareem Hunt from suspension after the 8th game. On defense, they upgraded at damn near every position and could be a dominant one. In the end, I’m picking the Browns to win their opener.
Cleveland Win 24-21
We head to the NFC for a huge matchup to open the season. The Atlanta Falcons will travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings. The Falcons are hoping to erase everything that happened last season. Atlanta dealt with injuries on the defensive side. On the offensive side, Matt Ryan had a wonderful year, but the offensive line wasn’t that great. Can the Falcons return to Super Bowl form of three years ago? Minnesota had their own issues last season. When the Vikings signed Kirk Cousins, Minnesota thought they could make a Super Bowl run. Instead, the Vikings missed the playoffs entirely but they’re trying to get back to the dominating team. The defense should be great again and they’re hoping Dalvin Cook can stay healthy. I’m thinking the front four of the Vikings can cause problems and lead them to the win.
Minnesota Win 30-28
We have another great matchup to start the 2019 NFL opening week. The Los Angeles Rams make the cross country trip to Carolina to battle the Panthers. The Rams still have a bad taste in their mouth after there Super Bowl loss. The Rams are hoping Todd Gurley is healthy and reclaim his title as best running back in the league. The Rams defense will have their hands full with Christian McCaffrey and possibly a healthy Cam Newton. Can the Rams win their opener on the road? The big question for the Panthers is the health of Cam Newton. Newton already had the issues with his shoulder, but he sprained his foot in a preseason game against New England. The Panthers and Rams defense could play a huge part of this game, but I’m thinking the Panthers win.
Carolina Win 20-17
We head back to the AFC as the Kansas City Chiefs travel to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars. The Chiefs had an amazing season last year and Patrick Mahomes walked away as the league MVP. Kansas City fell in the AFC title game last season to New England. The Chiefs are hoping to repeat their regular season from a year ago. Kansas City should be one of the better teams this season, but the defense is still the issue. Jacksonville is hoping to erase their horrible season from a year ago. This season, Jacksonville finally replaced Blake Bortles with Nick Foles. The Jaguars still possess one of the better defenses in the NFL, but the offense need to stay on the field. This will be a tough test for the Jaguars, but in the end Kansas City will win.
Kansas City Win 31-30
We head to the west coast for this matchup. The Indianapolis Colts travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers. Coming into the season, Indianapolis was looked at as one of the Super Bowl favorites. Andrew Luck abruptly retired and left the organization without their franchise QB. The Colts will have to turn to Jacoby Brissett with the hopes of having a successful season. Can the Colts defense help them win this road game? The Chargers have their own issues as they hope to make a Super Bowl run. As we all know, Melvin Gordon is still holding out and thought they would sign LeSean McCoy. Without one of the best RBs in the league, can the Chargers beat the Colts? Los Angeles will have enough to win their home opener.
Los Angeles Win 27-17
We have the first Sunday night game of the season. The Pittsburgh Steelers will travel to a familiar foe in New England to battle the Patriots. Pittsburgh barely missed the playoffs last season and they’re looking to rebound. This season, we know that they’ll be without LeVeon Bell and Antonio Brown. Will JuJu Smith-Schuster as the top target for Big Ben, how will the offense look like? Can the defense make an impact this season? New England is coming off their 6th Super Bowl championship and will be looking for another one. Tom Brady will be without Rob Gronkowski because he’s officially retired. Can the new look offense and Tom Brady continue to be great? The defense went through changes and hoping to continue to improve. This rivalry is a good one and, in the end, I’m riding with the Patriots for the home opener.
New England Win 30-20
We have two games featured on Monday night. We have a potential Super Bowl matchup as the Houston Texans travel to New Orleans to face the Saints. Before Week 1, the Texans have been in the headlines with all of their wheeling and dealing. They lost Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle, but they gained an elite offensive lineman and another speedy WR. With all the changes, can DeShaun Watson lead the Texans to the promised land? When it comes to New Orleans, they still have the bad taste in their mouth after the NFC title game. New Orleans is looking to start the season off right and finally make the Super Bowl again. With the Texans and Saints, this could be one of the higher scoring games of the season. In the end, it’s hard to beat the Saints at home so I’m going with New Orleans.
New Orleans Win 41-38
The second Monday night game and the final one of the week are between division rivals. The Denver Broncos travel to Oakland to face the new-look Raiders. The Broncos will turn to Joe Flacco with the hopes he brings stability at the QB position. The Broncos still have a nice defense and the offense should be improved from a year ago. Can Flacco lead the Broncos to a road win to start the season? Oakland is hoping to improve on their dreaded season from a year ago. Can Derek Carr return to Pro Bowl form with the addition of Antonio Brown? With the great draft picks, can they step in and make a difference? For this game, I’m thinking Oakland send their fans home happy.
Oakland Win 27-20
