Steelers Defeat Chargers on Impressive Defensive Performance

After an entire day in the NFL, the Sunday night game took place in Los Angeles. The Pittsburgh Steelers traveled to the west coast to battle the Chargers. Earlier in the day, we saw Deshaun Watson outduel Patrick Mahomes as the Texans beat the Chiefs. The New York Jets notched their first win as Sam Darnold returned and lead them to the win over Dallas. The 49ers remained unbeaten after dominating the Rams 20-7. The Seattle Seahawks went on the road and came away with the win over the Cleveland Browns. Jameis Winston tossed 5 INTs as Carolina remained unbeaten since Kyle Allen took over. Kirk Cousins had his second consecutive great game as the Vikings blew out Philadelphia. Let’s see how the Sunday night game played out between the Steelers and Chargers.

First Half

Pittsburgh went into halftime with a surprising 21-0 lead. The Steelers defense looked like the Steel Curtain defense from back in the day. Pittsburgh pressured Philip Rivers to looking frustrated from the start. Devin Bush recovered a Philip Rivers behind their line lateral and scored to start things off early. Pittsburgh used that same pressure later in the first quarter to force Rivers into an interception. James Connor scored on a 12-yard run. In the second quarter, Connor caught a 26 yard TD from Delvin Hodges to make it 21-0. Hodges started in the place of Mason Rudolph, who’s out with a concussion. The Steelers defense dominated the Chargers in the first half.

Second Half

For most of the 3rd quarter, we had a defensive battle. The Chargers defense finally settled down as they held the Steelers to a field goal. The Chargers finally scored on a field goal within the first minute of the fourth quarter. The Chargers intercepted Hodges, which lead to a touchdown that cut the lead to 24-10. After stopping the Steelers, Los Angeles went down the field and scored again with about a minute and a half left. Hunter Henry caught the TD pass from Rivers, and it was his second touchdown of the quarter. The Chargers had all three timeouts left and chose to do an onside kick. After stopping the Steelers on the first three downs, Pittsburgh was in field goal position. The Steelers punted and the downed it at the 1-yard line.

The Chargers had to go 99 yards with about a minute to, but Cam Sutton intercepted Rivers to end the game. The Steelers went into victory formation and won the game 24-17.
