Welcome to Week 12 of the college football season. This is crunch time as teams are battling for position. The new college football rankings are out and surprisingly, they put Georgia above Alabama. In my mock playoff rankings, I had the Crimson Tide above the Bulldogs. My record from a week ago was 4-1 and the only loss was the upset of Penn State by Minnesota. LSU solidified themselves as the best team in the country by beating Alabama on the road. Georgia is showing why their defense should be considered the best in the country by blanking Missouri. Wisconsin beat Iowa in a hard fought game and one that the winner could still challenge Minnesota. Oklahoma was involved in another close as they barely got by Iowa State 42-41. This week I’ll be predicting another 5 games and we’ll see how things turn out.
We kick things off in the SEC and a battle between two teams in the top-12. The 4th ranked Georgia Bulldogs travel to Auburn to battle the 12th ranked Tigers. The Auburn versus Georgia match-up is the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. They first met all the way back in 1892. This game has major implications for Georgia. If they were to beat Auburn, they would clinch a berth in the SEC Championship game. Georgia could also keep their playoff hopes alive. For Auburn, they have a chance to end the playoff hopes of two of their final opponents. This game features two of the best defenses in the country. The offense for Georgia and Auburn has their share of issues. This will need to be a game that Jake Fromm asserts himself in. This game could come down to the wire and I’m going with Georgia, barely!
Georgia Win 27-26
We have another top 15 matchup and this time it’s from the Big 12 Conference. The 10th ranked Oklahoma Sooners travel to Waco to battle the undefeated 13th ranked Baylor Bears. Oklahoma have been struggling a lot lately. Last week, they almost suffered another upset loss to Iowa State. While the offense continues to score at will, the defense can’t stop anyone. If Oklahoma want to get back into playoff contention, they’ll need help and a decisive win over Baylor. Can Oklahoma hand the Bears their first defeat? Baylor barely edged TCU last week to keep their undefeated season alive. Despite being undefeated, Baylor slid down a spot in the newest rankings. The Bears haven’t faced anyone and if they can beat Oklahoma, this will look better on their resume. Does Baylor have enough fire power to beat the Sooners? I’m going with Oklahoma to hand Baylor their first defeat.
Oklahoma Win 34-27
We head to the Big Ten Conference for this top 20 matchup. The undefeated 8th ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers head to Iowa to face the 20th ranked Hawkeyes. Iowa is looking to end the playoff hopes of the Gophers by handing them their first loss. Iowa is one of the tougher places to play in the country. The Hawkeyes are coming off a heartbreaking loss in Wisconsin last week where they almost defeated the Badgers. Minnesota shocked the country last weekend by defeating Penn State. With the win, the Golden Gophers jumped 9 spots in the newest playoff rankings. With a win, Minnesota all but clinch a spot in the Big Ten Championship game. If they were to lose, their conference championship hopes could be in jeopardy.
The final game of the season takes place against Wisconsin. If the Badgers don’t lose any more games and Minnesota drop one, it’ll determine to West champ. As impressed, I was of Minnesota, this Iowa team is dangerous and I’m picking the upset.
Iowa Win 30-28
We have another battle between top-25 teams in this one. The 23rd ranked Navy Midshipmen travels to South Bend to battle the 16th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Navy has always possessed a great rushing attack. This year that’s no different as the Midshipmen have one of the better offenses in the nation. Navy also possess a physical defense. The only loss on their record came against a tough Memphis team. Do they have enough to beat Notre Dame? Notre Dame won’t make the playoffs this year, but they’re still eyeing a major bowl. If Notre Dame wins out, they’ll most likely be playing in a prolific bowl. Can the Fighting Irish continue their winning ways against Navy? I’m picking the Fighting Irish to prevail.
Notre Win 34-21
The final game of my picks is another Big Ten matchup. The surprising Indiana Hoosiers travel to State College to battle the 9th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. You’re probably thinking, why is Indiana featured in a football game? The Hoosiers come into this game with a 7-2 record and a 4-game winning streak. That’s the good part about Indiana. The bad part is they’ve beaten Rutgers, Maryland, Nebraska and Northwestern in those games. Those teams combine for a 10-27 record. Is Indiana legit? Penn State suffered their first defeat last weekend at the hands of Minnesota. The Nittany Lions dropped from 4th to 9th in the college football playoffs. Penn State isn’t out of the playoffs, but they’ll need to win out and have some help. Penn State should take care of Indiana.
Penn State Win 38-21
