Daddy’s Hangout 2020 Royal Rumble Review

The Road to WrestleMania began with the 2020 Royal Rumble. The Royal Rumble is where the element of surprise is at an all-time high. Like other years, the 2020 Royal Rumble had its fair share of rumors coming into the event. Besides the men and women Rumble matches, we had a few other matches also. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt defended his Universal title against Daniel Bryan in a Strap Match. Bayley put her Smackdown Women’s Championship on the line against Lacey Evans. Asuka tried to take away the Raw Women’s Championship from Becky Lynch. In a Falls Count Anywhere match, Roman Reigns took on King Corbin. A few weeks back, we had our early 2020 Royal Rumble predictions. Let’s see how they fared on the day Kobe Bryant passed away with his daughter, Gianna and seven others.

We kicked things off on the main show with Corbin battling Reigns. These two had been feuding for months now and the match didn’t disappoint. They beat the hell out of each other and fought all over the place. While fighting in the stands, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode attacked Reigns. The Usos helped Reigns to even things up. During one point, Jey Uso hit a crazy dive from the stands onto Ziggler & Roode. Corbin & Reigns put each other through tables and even fought on top of the dugout in Minute Maid Park. The finish came when Reigns hit a Superman Punch and Spear on the dugout for the pin. Winner: Roman Reigns

Match Rating: 3.5/5- Really exciting opening match that got the crowd pumped.

We had the Women’s Royal Rumble match here. We had surprises like Molly Holly, Kelly Kelly, Santina Marella and Beth Phoenix. This match also had its share of returns like Naomi and Tamina Snuka. NXT was in full force in this match also and the crowd loved it. Bianca Belair started with Alexa Bliss and she had a dominant showing. It seems like they’re setting up Belair for a bright future. The final four came down to Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Charlotte Flair and Shayna Baszler. Great moment in the match when Phoenix & Natalya hit the Hart Attack on Baszler. Shortly after that, Beth Phoenix turned on Natalya and eliminated her. Baszler works on Beth now. Flair runs in the ring and is still legal apparently.

She tries to eliminate Baszler and Beth but can’t. Flair and Baszler stare each other down. Beth is dumped by Baszler. Baszler and Flair go at it. Flair hangs on. Flair eliminates Baszler to win the match and earn the WrestleMania 36 title shot. Women’s 2020 Royal Rumble Winner: Charlotte Flair

Match Rating: 3.75/5- The match was really good, but I was pulling for Baszler to win.

We had Bayley defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Lacey Evans. Evans has been feuding with Bayley and Sasha Banks for several weeks now. Recently, Evans upset Bayley in a non-title match to earn this opportunity. Honestly, the match was more competitive than I thought it would be. With a little more seasoning, Evans could be a future champion. Towards the end, Bayley sends Evans back into the barrier in front of her daughter. Bayley brings it back in, but Evans blocks the Bayley-to-Belly. Evans keeps fighting and nails a neckbreaker. Evans with a standing moonsault now. Evans goes to the top, salutes and goes for the springboard moonsault but Bayley gets her knees up. Bayley goes on and goes right into the pin attempt for the win to retain. Winner and Still SmackDown Women’s Champ: Bayley

Match Rating: 3/5

“The Fiend” Bray Wyatt put his Universal Championship on the line against Daniel Bryan in a strap match. These two have been feuding for a while also with mind games being played. As far as the match went, this was a great one. We didn’t have the dark arena with red lighting for this one. The two of them beat the hell out of each other with the strap numerous times. The Fiend hit Sister Abigail and applied the Mandible Claw, but Bryan escaped them. On the other hand, the Fiend was able to escape a couple running knees and submissions from Bryan. In the end, Bryan starts getting hyped up as the crowd cheers him on. The Fiend jumps right up to his feet first. Bryan senses this and turns around. They stare each other down.

Bryan grabs the strap and starts beating on Fiend with it. It does nothing to The Fiend. Fiend applies the Mandible and Bryan tries to fight out of it with strikes and slaps with the leather. Fiend grabs Bryan and chokeslams him into the mat out of nowhere, holding him down for the pin to retain. Winner and Still Universal Champion: “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt

Match Rating: 4/5- Awesome Match

Becky Lynch defended the Raw Women’s Championship against Asuka. Lynch came into this match having never beaten Asuka before. These two have been going at it for several weeks now. During their contract signing, Asuka sprayed Lynch with that green mist. After almost knocking out Lynch, Asuka attacks and drops Becky again with a kick to the head for another close pin attempt. Asuka smiles as she goes for another Asuka Lock. Lynch counters and goes for the Dis-Arm-Her, settling for a submission into a 2 count. They tangle some more, and Becky takes her down for a 2 count as Sane looks on. The referee counts while they’re both down. They both get up and unload with strikes.

The referee barely gets hit in the corner. Lynch drops Asuka with a back kick as she goes for the green mist, which just goes straight in the air due to the kick. Lynch applies the Dis-Arm-Her and Asuka taps for the finish. Winner and Still Raw Women’s Champ: Becky Lynch

Match Rating: 3.5/5

We now have the Men’s 2020 Royal Rumble match. The surprises in this match were MVP and WWE Hall-Of-Famer, Edge to an enormous pop. We had Matt Riddle and Keith Lee representing NXT. Brock Lesnar entered the 2020 Royal Rumble as #1 as Heyman announced weeks ago. Lesnar eliminated the first eleven entrants by himself. Keith Lee came in at #13 and held his own with Lesnar. Braun Strowman and Ricochet were next. Lesnar eliminated Strowman and Lee together and the crowd was pissed. McIntyre entered #17 and with a low blow on Lesnar by Ricochet he Claymore kicked Brock to eliminate him. The fans went crazy and the biggest pop came when Edge entered at 21. The final four was Edge, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre. After Orton teased Edge with the RKO, he eventually turned on Orton and eliminated him.

Reigns eliminated Edge to a chorus of boos. Reigns and McIntyre were the final two and the crowd was going crazy. Drew ends up flooring Reigns with a big Claymore Kick out of nowhere. Fans pop as Drew immediately follows up and eliminates Reigns. Men’s 2020 Royal Rumble Winner: Drew McIntyre

Match Rating: 4/5- This match was booked damn near perfect. They built Brock up to whoever eliminated him, the fans would be behind him. Happy to see McIntyre get the opportunity to main event WrestleMania.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10- Awesome PPV! Below are my top 3 matches of the night.

  1. The Fiend Bray Wyatt vs. Daniel Bryan
  2. Men’s Royal Rumble
