Almost two years ago, my life changed as I transitioned from working night shift to the 2nd shift. My sleeping has improved and it feels good to have the entire weekend with my family. It doesn’t matter what shift I’m working, there’s nothing like a good nap. During the Christmas break, I was getting in a nap almost every day. My nap times came around late in the evening and it kept me up most of the night. Ever since I was a teenager, I love to clean up in the middle of the night. My daughters have adopted that pattern as they pretty much does the same also. Either way, none of that is possible without taking a nap. Many people don’t realize that taking a nap is great for the memory. Studies have shown that sleep plays an important role in storing memories. A nap can help you remember things learned earlier in the day as much as a full night’s sleep. Taking naps works to keep you from forgetting things like motor skills, sense perception, and verbal recall, too. My wife has always said this is something I’ve used over the years, but the studies don’t lie.

I’ll be the first to say that my mood is a little on the cranky side when I’m tired. Napping, or even just resting for an hour without falling asleep, can brighten your outlook. Experts say relaxation that comes from lying down and resting is a mood booster, whether you fall asleep or not. After gathering my thoughts after the nap I’m a much different person.

There have been many nights that my lunch break was to take a nap. Trust me; there were times it felt I wouldn’t make it the entire night. There were nights I’d take a 20-to-30 minute nap and it worked wonders.

Being someone that has been blogging for over 10 years, you can’t come up with nothing. Seeing I’m working a full-time job also there are times that I’m too tired to come up with something. REM sleep, which typically starts 70 to 90 minutes after you fall asleep, activates parts of your brain associated with imagery and dreaming. A nap with REM sleep can help you combine ideas in new ways to come up with answers.
