Best of 1994 Hip Hop for Mixtape Friday

1994 was a special year if you’re a fan of hip hop. We all can agree that 1988 was the original Golden Era of Hip Hop. 1994 saw all-time great albums like Illmatic, Ready to Die, The Diary and Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik drop. While Nas, Biggie, Scarface and Outkast released classics others like GangStarr, O.C., Redman, Warren G and Method Man dropped dope projects. The mid-90s starting with 1993 to around 1997 is considered the second Golden Era of Hip Hop. With my new Mixtape Friday format, this is a compilation that I put together in honor of 1994 Hip Hop. There’s close to one hundred songs and it’s divided into four…

Usher Confessions Released 20 Years Ago Today

Usher is one of the biggest artists in the world today. Usher released his first album all the way back in August of 1994. Last month, he dropped his ninth album called Coming Home and it was followed by a major tour. Around the same time, Usher performed at halftime of the Super Bowl. To this day, Confessions is the best album by him and one of my all-time favorites of any genre. Usher dropped Confessions 20 years ago today and the marketing of this album was top tier. The biggest controversy from the album came about the mistress-impregnating concept of “Confessions Part II”. Due to the controversy and…

Usher U Don’t Have to Call for Throwback Thursday

Usher has been in the news a lot for the past year or so. We all remember the stuff with KeKe Palmer about a year ago. Usher was serenading women, and it made a lot of headlines. Usher released his ninth studio album called Coming Home last Friday. Every album Usher has released went on to go at least gold. The only ones to go gold were his self-titled first album in 1994 and the Hard II Love one from 2016. If that wasn’t enough, Usher performed at the Halftime show of last week’s Super Bowl. If that wasn’t enough, it was rumored that Usher married his girlfriend while in…

Kamikaze by Twista Released 20 Years Ago Today

Twista dropped his first album back in 1992 under the name of Tung Twista. In 1994, he dropped his 2nd album called Resurrection, but only went by Twista then. Both albums didn’t get a lot of love, so we didn’t hear from him for a couple years. In 1996, Twista reemerged with Do or Die as he was featured on their smash hit Po Pimp. Due to the massive success of the single, Twista was back in the spotlight. The following year, he dropped his third album called Adrenaline Rush. Adrenaline Rush is considered by many, and I’m included to be a classic album. The album went platinum and Twista…

Brandy Have You Ever? For Throwback Thursday

Brandy was one of the biggest artists in the 90s. She released her first album in the fall of 1994. At the time of her self-titled debut album, she was only 15 years old. The album won a Soul Train Music for best new artist in 1995. I Wanna Be Down was her big single as it went platinum. The track was so popular that she got Queen Latifah and MC Lyte for the hip hop remix. The album went 4X platinum and Brandy was an overnight sensation. In 1996, Brandy starred in her own sitcom called Moesha. Moesha was a great show, but she returned to the music scene…

The Roots What They Do for Throwback Thursday

The Roots have been putting it down for almost 30 years now. They hit the scene all the way back in 1994 with their From the Ground Up EP. Black Thought is one of the greatest rappers to ever touch the mic. Black Thought is listed as the 28th greatest rapper of all-time by Billboard magazine. There discography consists of fourteen studio albums, plus three collaborative studio albums, three compilation albums, two extended plays, and two live albums. In addition, that those joints, Black Thought has released three studio and three EPs also. In 1995 is when I became a huge fan of The Roots. The Do You Want More…

Lauryn Hill Ex-Factor for Throwback Thursday

The Fugees were one of the highest selling acts in hip hop in the mid-1990s. Blunted on Reality was their first album that hit the store in 1994. Despite being a good album, it didn’t sell too well after its release. In 1996, they released their second album called The Score. The project was released on the same day as All Eyez on Me by 2Pac. The Score went on to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. The album went on to sell over 7 million copies and Lauryn Hill was one of the hottest artists in the world. Lauryn Hill also was featured on the classic If I…

2Pac Strictly 4 My Niggaz Released 30 Years Ago Today

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop, Billboard just released their 50 greatest rappers of all-time. Many people didn’t like it as expected, but I’m not getting upset over someone’s else’s opinion. Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar finished as the top-2 MCs ever and Nas, 2Pac and Eminem rounded out the top-5. If you have followed me over the years, you know that 2Pac is my GOAT and Nas is right behind him. Unfortunately, 2Pacalypse Now wasn’t played by me until after his second album. One of my friends introduced me to Pac’s music and instantly became a fan. 30 years ago today Strictly 4 My Niggaz was released. The…

2Pac is still regarded by many as one of the greatest rappers of all-time. Two months later, Death Row Records his first posthumous album The 7 Day Theory under Makaveli. The following year, his second posthumous joint was released. R U Still Down was the name of the album and it was released 25 years ago today. R U Still Down marked his 6th album and his second double album. The album was the first…

3 Helpful Tips to Maximize Audience Engagement

Greenland needs better PR. Sure, it’s cold and far from everything. But given recent world events, you’d think there would be swathes of pioneering individuals who would have loved to go and become part of one of the many Greenland towns that are now completely abandoned. They had the internet. TV. Power stations. Schools. Libraries. All in need of investment and direction, but the set up was ready to go. No one came. And now it’s all just sat there. Hiding away and forgotten with no one to put the bins out. Offering great products or services is not the same as selling great products and services. The difference is…

Classic SWV Anything for Throwback Thursday

Welcome to another Thursday, that means we’re closer to the weekend. I’ve had two weeks of music to check out. On Thanksgiving, I chose not to post a Throwback Thursday. The new Jeezy album, 2Pac Duets and a pair of personal mixtapes from Ludacris and Eminem were bumped. D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar and the debut from Xscape were played also. For my featured Throwback Thursday track, we’re going with SWV. SWV was one of the many highlights of the R&B era of the 90s. Mind of Mystikal Released 25 Years Ago Today

Before Mystikal was a No Limit soldier, he released an album back in 1994. In 1995, he re-released the album and named it Mind of Mystikal. Mind of Mystikal dropped 25 years ago today and I listened to this the first time riding with a friend. Unpredictable was a totally different album from the Mind of Mystikal. The big track from the album was Here I Go and that beat was insane in my homeboy’s system. During this time, we called him the Busta Rhymes of the south which was a compliment. Beware was the single that was being promoted and one he had a video for. While Mystikal didn’t…
