TNA Bound For Glory 2011 PPV Review

On October 16th, TNA had it’s Bound for Glory PPV which is equivalent to WWEs WrestleMania being it’s there biggest PPV of the year. Plenty of storylines in and out of the ring was going onto the event. We’ve had the long build for the Sing/Hogan match and the build of Robert “Bobby” Roode as he faces Kurt Angle for the championship. The news out of the ring was Hogan basically dissing Roode saying he wasn’t ready to be a champion. Afterwards A.J Styles fired back at Hogan with comments on twitter. But on to the event and here we go. But also the Tag title match between Mexicans America and Ink Inc was a free stream match and held before the PPV started.

Well this was the official opener and usually the X-division always deliver a great match and this one was really good filled with high spots. One really cool spot was Kendrick hitting the sliced bread off the top rope for a nearfall. But in the end Aries won with the brainbuster. I must say that Aries is so far above the other X-division competitors right now it’s crazy. Rating= 3/5

Now if you’ve followed wrestling in the last 15  years you know this has produced some of the best matches, they’ve been rivals since the days of ECW in the mid to late 90s. I must say that Jerry Lynn can still go in the ring. Match was filled with crazy bumps and alot of weapons. Still a pretty decent match but if I suggest you google them to see some of there earlier matches. The ending came when RVD hit the Van Terminator. Afterwards they shook hands and posed for the crowd. Rating= 2.5/5

Crimson vs. Samoa Joe vs. Matt Morgan

Now it seems that TNA has big plans for Crimson and maybe he will become a star but I just don’t see it. Now with that said I’m a huge Samoa Joe fan and been a fan of his and I don’t understand why they’re having him lose all the time. I really hope he jumps ship when his contract expires. Ok now I’m finish venting, now to the match. Well Crimson won with the spear on of course Samoa Joe. Nothing to be said about the match. Rating= 1.5/5

Bully Ray, love his character and he’s one of the best heels in the business. Alot of brawling in this match, also alot of weapons was used. One big spot saw Bubba hit the Bubba Bomb on Anderson through a table. The finish saw Anderson hit the Mic Check on Bubba throug a table for the win. Rating=2.5/5

Winter(c) vs. Mickie James vs. Velvet Sky vs. Madison Rayne

Well this match was a disaster and had too much going on. You had Karen Jarrett, who was the special referee going against everything Mickie and Velvet was doing. Then Angelina Love who was in the corner of Winter interfering backfiring and then Winter spit the “red blood” in Karen face allowing Velvet Sky to hit the pedigree like move on Madison Rayne while Traci Brooks made the 3 count. Rating= 1.5/5

The storyline is that they’re best friends and Daniels has been bragging that he beat Styles the last time they fought and that Styles can’t beat him. Now these tow are great workers and Styles is one of my favorites. This match was horrible and the ending was worse. As Styles was going after Daniels in the corner with a screwdriver that was brought to the ring, Daniels took the mic and said “I Quit” and ran out of the ring. As Styles was walking up the ramp Daniels attacked him and said that Styles never beat him. Rating= 1.5/5

Well I didn’t care about this match at StarrCade 97, yeah almost 14 years ago so I didn’t care about it now. Just say Ric Flair was out there for the match and this was one of the slowest matches ever. After Sting won, Immortal came out and attacked him while Hogan was in the corner bleeding. Then Sting crawled to him and asked Hogan to help him and then out of nowhere Hogan turn face and the crowd to love it but I don’t understand the logic of this but Hogan helps Sting fight off Immortal and in the end they shake hands. Rating 1/5

Now time for the main event and they have done a good job at building Roode up for his world title opportunity. Now Angle entered the match having an issue with his hamstring. Roode is probably my favorite in TNA right now so I was happy for him getting the opportunity. Even though Angle was hurt it turned out to be a pretty good match with Angle getting the win in controversial fashion when not only he held the rope to pin Roode but Roode had his arm under the rope. It felt rushed and just came off bad, seeing that Angle is hurt this was the perfect time to put the belt on Roode but rumor has it that Hogan lobbied for Roode not to win the title because he’s blasted him saying he was ready. Rating=3/5

Overall= 1.75/5. Only matches that were worth a damn was the opener and the main event. For this to be the biggest PPV of the year TNA really dropped the ball. I don’t have nothing else to say about it.

Aftermath of the Hell In A Cell PPV

Well we’ve just had the Hell In A Cell PPV and I think it could have been worse and it could have been better. But first of all they need to drop this gimmick PPV because seeing all the great and brutal Hell In A Cell matches we’ve had in the past, which was actually brutal nothing like the PG Era matches we have now. I mean we’ve had the first one between Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker from the Badd Blood PPV back in 1997 to the epic one between the Undertaker and Mankind at the King of the Ring PPV in 1998, you know the one where Undertaker threw him off the cage. But you see where I’m going here. I just can’t see the promotion showing some of the great moments of the past to what we have now.

So let’s start the rant I mean like I said let’s cut the number of PPvs down to around 6 to 8, I know it’s big money for the WWE but anything is better than 13, I mean alot of the PPVs have little to no build at all. I mean they could put on so many good shows seeing if they properly build them and have guys who can actually wrestle be apart of the card. I mean Daniel Bryan, Wade Barrett, Drew McIntyre, Justin Gabriel, Tyson Kidd and just some good talent that could be putting on great matches. I know the WWE tried to get away from the wrestling aspect and be referred to as sports entertainment but the main reason fans show up is because of wrestling and they pop for good wrestling especially with a good buildup and story.

So let’s look at the PPVs they have and what I would change about them. Now in January they have the Royal Rumble which is perfectly fine with me and it’s traditional so I’d keep it. In February they have the Elimination Chamber which is a toss up for me because I actually like it but if kept they need to kill the PG stuff for this event because we’ve had these matches in the past and they were brutal but it scares me being so close to WrestleMania. Which leads me to the WrestleMania PPV, which is the granddaddy of them all, so no touching that. Then it’s on to Extreme Rules which I would eliminate because there really isn’t anything extreme about the PPV and a waste of time. The next 2 PPVs are Over the Limit and Capitol Punishment that take place in May and June respectively. But get rid of them and bring back the King of the Ring PPV, which is not only a great traditional PPV but it could create a star by having them wrestling all night and building them up. Then in July we have the Money In the Bank PPV which is one of the more exciting PPVs and have loved it since they started the concept. Of course in August they have SummerSlam which would be kept also. Night of Champions I would keep also but I would move it to another month and would have proper build seeing all the titles are being defended. Then we have the Hell In A Cell which I’ve stated that I would get rid of the PPV and maybe have a Hell In A Cell match at one of the PPVs to finish off a feud. Vengeance is the next PPV and I would keep this one also I like the name and if built properly and could be a great concept. The Survivor Series is also a keeper also so I wouldn’t touch that maybe I’d go with the old school 5-on-5 tag matches. Finally we have the Tables, Ladders and Chairs PPV also which I would get rid of also.

Now we have it I’d keep 8 PPVs and spread them out during the year and they’ll have proper build going into each one of them. Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, WrestleMania, the returning King of the Ring, Money In the Bank, SummerSlam, Night of Champions, Vengeance and the Survivor Series are all keepers.

Now Saturday I’ll talk about what I would do with the talent moving forward so tune in to my next post.

Thank you.

WWE Hell In A Cell 2011 Review

Basically I’m going go match by match and only talk about skits or whatever that was of any importance. With that said let’s get to the review and remember I’m just a father who’s followed wrestling for over 25 years and not a professional writer just from a fan.

We start off with Christian who’s been feuding with Sheamus for the last few weeks costing each other title opportunities but as Christian walks out we see the Miz and R-Truth walking to ringside with tickets in hand but John Laurinaitis with security escorted them out of the building. Sheamus finally comes out to a nice reaction, by the way I’m a huge Sheamus fan, I just think he’s a really good wrestler and never seems to have a bad match.

Sheamus vs. Christian

Alot of back and forth action between these with Christian almost getting a nearfall after a second spear, with the first one happening on the floor. But Sheamus regained momentum and won with the Brogue Kick after about 14 minutes in a really good opening match. But I expected it out of these 2 guys because they both are good performers. 3.5/5

Next after Mark Henry was interviewed by Matt Striker we had the battle of Sin Caras next. Which they’ve been feuding for the past few weeks ever since the original Sin Cara returned to action to confront the other Sin Cara. It was revealed the past Smackdown that the (Black) Sin Cara took the original Sin Cara identity because in Mexico the (Blue) Sin Cara took the Mistico character from the other Sin Cara so he’s getting his revenge.Which led to this match.

Now actually someone who’s followed wrestling for a long time from different areas of the globe I am familiar with Mistico(Blue Sin Cara) and Hunico(Black Sin Cara) have quite a bit of history with each other. Not alot of people in America are used to the fast paced lucha style but this wasn’t the best match but it was bad either. Alot of action with alot of nice moves including a crossbody onto the floor and a nice armdrag from the top by the Blue SC. He won with a sunset flip to a powerbomb in about 9-10 mintes.  2/5

Air Boom vs. Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler w/Vickie Guerrero

This was a really good match between 4 great competitors. Also alot of fast paced, back and forth action with the crowd really into this match throughout. WWE take note start pushing some of these young guys, the crowds love great wrestling. The finish saw Swagger trying to powerbomb Bourne from the top rope but was countered with a hurricanrana for the win. Afterwards Vickie was yelling at Swagger following the loss. 3.5/5

Next we had the World Heavyweight Championship match in a Cell between Randy Orton against Mark Henry. Alot of brawling in this match and not alot of newsworthy stuff to talk about in this match except that Henry kicked out of an RKO. But Henry retained the title with the Worlds Strongest Slam. After the match Henry attacked Orton and went to put the chair around the ankle of Orton like he’s done to other guys like the Big Show, Kane and the Great Khali but Orton moves before Henry lands on the chair. Orton picks up the chair and beats up Henry with it. 2.5/5

Cody Rhodes come out to cut a promo basically saying he wants to bring prestige back to the Intercontinental title which was held by greats such as Ricky Steamboat, Bret Hart, the late Randy Savage and Stone Cold Steve Austin, then he revealed the classic title belt, which is one of my all-time favorites. That he’ll wear it with more dignity and pride than everyone. Which led to John Laurinaitis to come out saying he’s going to defend his title against John Morrison.

Cody Rhodes vs. John Morrison

Pretty decent back and forth action but nothing special and I’d expect more from these 2 guys. But Rhodes got the win after about 7 minutes with the Oklahoma Roll. 2/5

Beth Phoenix vs. Kelly Kelly

Nothing really to say about this match but Beth should have been won the title but she finally captured it when Natalya hit Kelly with the microphone while the ref wasn’t looking which led to the Glam Slam to win the Divas Title. 2/5

Final Match saw the WWE Champ John Cena against C.M. Punk and Alberto Del Rio in the Hell In A Cell match. This was a really good match, which I think this was the match of the night. Alot of nearfalls and towards the end was a smart move by Del Rio which saw him hit Cena outside the cage and lock him out, which led to him winning the title when Punk went for the GTS but Del Rio laid him out with the pipe. 4/5

Post match, the cell raised up, Cena ran back in and also running in were The Miz & R-Truth wearing hoods. The announcers picked up on who they were immediately as did the fans. The cage lowered again, locking them all in. Who lowered the cage? Wow………..Another mystery. They beat up Del Rio, Punk & Cena as well as refs Scott Armstrong & Mike Chioda. Truth attacked the camera guys too. I really loved the beatdown. It was old school in its ways with Jim Ross yelling at the top of his lungs, which only added to the greatness of it. Everybody came down to ringside including Triple H, John Laurinaitis and the entire locker room. They couldn’t get inside the cell, so it was a situation where they were helpless. Finally, the cops made their way to ringside, a dude with a bolt cutter came out and Miz & Truth surrendered in the ring with everybody else down around them. The two cops escorted Truth & Miz out of the ring with handcuffs. As they walked down the aisle to huge heat, Triple H attacked both of them with fists to the head. The crowd loved that. It was a wild situation. Laurinaitis tried to break it up, but Hunter shoved him down. Two goons pulled off Triple H as the show ended with Miz & Truth getting taken away.

What a great way to end the PPV which leads to more uncertainty.

Overall PPV Rating: 3/5………Not great but not bad either I also added a 1/2 point for the chaos at the end of the PPV.

Next review: TNA Bound for Glory takes place on Sunday October 16.

WWE SummerSlam 2011 Review

Well before I get started I just want to let everyone know a little bit about myself as it relates to wrestling. I’ve basically grew up on it and I’ve been a fan since I was 7 years old, yeah I know back in the day. I got hooked on it the moment I started watching with 2 of my uncles. One of them was a security guard at various events where I met the likes of the Road Warriors, Ric Flair along with the Horsemen, Sting, Lex Luger and many more. He also bought me all the magazines. Now my other uncle when I spent the night with him stayed up all night watching wrestling on Saturdays with Joe Pedecino and Boni Blackstone and we even used to call the wrestling hotline, you know way before the internet……………..I know a long time ago so yeah I’ve been following since around 1984 or 1985. Ok enough of that, it’s time to get started with my first review and oh yeah I’m going to be reviewing the TNA PPV next month, No Surrender.

SummerSlam opened up withe the Miz coming out to a nice reaction to cut a promo saying he thanks the fans for insisting he wrestle at SummerSlam in which he was cut off by R-Truth who came out to cut a promo in which, he was cut off by the music of Alberto Del Rio where he was introduced by his announcer Ricardo Rodriguez. Then Kofi Kingston came out followed by John Morrison and then Rey Mysterio, which they showed the Miz taking out Rey from the past Monday Night Raw.

John Morrison, Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston defeated The Miz, R-Truth and Albert Del Rio when Mysterio did a splash on R-Truth from the top rope to get the pinfall. Alot of action all the guys done a great job and it was a really good opener. I must say that Kofi Kingston’s elevation when he dives of the top rope is amaozing especially seeing it in slow motion.

The Match: 3/5

Then we cut backstage C.M. Punk was confronted by John Laurinaitis demanding him to apologize for kicking him in the head on Raw in which Punk did sarcastically then he was going to leave he was confronted by Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley.

Then we see a highlight package for the match between Mark Henry and Sheamus which shows Henry destroying Big Show and Kane. It also shows Sheamus destruction path since being in the WWE and him confronting Henry.

Mark Henry defeated Sheamus by countout when he slammed Sheamus through the barricade in which Sheamus was able to make the 10 count back in the ring. Very physical match and the finish is something I don’t mind so we’ll definitely get another match from these two. Henry have been on a role lately and maybe he’ll eventually get a title match down the road.

The Match: 2.5/5- Sick spat the end.

Afterwards we had Cee-Lo Green from the group Goodie Mob perform Bright Light, Big City from the Lady Killer album. I’ve been a Cee-Lo fan since the 90s when he came up with the Dungeon Family which featured Outkast.

Next we had Kelly Kelly defeating Beth Phoenix in what was a surprising good match between the two and if you follow wrestling for the past few years the divas division has been awful. But it was a nice match with Kelly getting the win after she rolled up Beth when she attempted to the Glam Slam.I can see them fighting again down the road possibly at the Night of Champions PPV.

The Match: 2.5/5

After the match Stephanie was seen leaving John Cena’s locker room. Then we cut to R-Truth talking about conspiracies to non other than Jimmy Hart where he was offering Truth his managerial services and Hart was telling him about his past successes with the Honky Tonk Man, Money Inc, and The Hart Foundation. Then Truth starting calling Hart little Jimmy. Then Truth hollered what y’all looking at and it was Ron Artest and his daughter.

Then we had Wade Barrett defeating Daniel Bryan with the Wasteland. Before the match they showed Bryan winning the Money In the Bank briefcase last month by kicking Barrett off the ladder then retrieving the briefcase and also Barrett attacking Bryan on Friday Smackdown after his match with Alberto Del Rio. But it was a nice match and I see a rematch down the road possibly for Bryans briefcase.

The Match: 3/5

Then we go to a recap of the feud between Christian and Orton that has lasted for around 3 to 4 months which alot of people complain saying the feud has been going on too long but I’m old-school and I think we don’t have enough long feuds anymore. Before the match Christian brought out Edge who said he was proud of Christian and thought he passed the torch to him but hated the way Christian was the title by D, then called him a whiny bitch and left.

Randy Orton defeated Christian to become the New Heavyweight Champion again in a great match where the brawled everywhere and at the end Orton hit a sick RKO onto the steel stairs. These 2 have had some great matches and this was no different.

The Match: 4.5/5- Great Match

Then we get the recap of the C.M. Punk/John Cena saga which lead to Punk leaving, Vince being fired and replaced by HHH. Then that lead to a tournament to crown a new champ and John Cena was the champ by the end of the night and C.M. Punk returned with his title around his waste.

C.M. Punk defeated John Cena with HHH was the special referee but it was done in controversy when HHH counted the 3 and Cena had his foot on the rope. But the night was over when Kevin Nash came through the crowd to attack Punk which allowed Alberto Del Rio to cash in his Money in the Bank on Punk.

The Match: 4.5/5- Great match and ending to a PPV.

It leads to alot of different ways they could go with the storyline but you gotta love when a PPV ends and you have so many questions and you can’t wait to see more.

Overall PPV: 3.75/5- There were 4 solid matches and 2 great matches.

Remembering”Macho Man” Randy Savage 11/15/52-5/20/11

I really don’t know where to begin with this, I mean I was going to write about this tragic event yesterday when it took place. But honestly I’m still stunned now as I write this on Saturday night around 10:40 because he was really a larger than life figure growing up. I mean while most people where Hulkamaniacs, you know fans of Hulk Hogan I never was, I was a huge fan of the Macho Man. I mean WrestleMania III when I was 8 years old when everyone was anticipating Hogan and his bout with Andre the Giant, I was a big fan of Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and “Macho Man” Randy Savage who went out and had until this day one of the most talked about and greatest matches ever.

You see not only can Savage play the heel, the bad guy in wrestling or he was also a great face, the good guy in wrestling. Also he had some of the best feuds in the history of the sports, yeah I’m calling wrestling a sport. He feuds with guys like Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Ultimate Warrior and he made Diamond Dallas Page go from a star to a superstar in WCW. Savage had the ability to not only draw fans into what’s going on with his actions but also his words. He was a 2 time WWF Champion, 4 time WCW Champion, Intercontinental Champion once and a King of the Ring winner in 1987. Here’s a video, which is a tribute to him.

I can think of so many memories of the Macho Man from the time when he won the WWF title against Ted DiBease in the finals for the vacant World Title, the marriage to Miss Elizabeth, or when he lost the retirement match with the Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VII when after he lost his then manager Sensational Sherri got in the ring and started kicking him around which brought Miss Elizabeth from ringside to the ring to throw Sherri off of him, which was a feel good moment and the countless feuds he had but one thing people remember about him even if you didn’t watch wrestling was the Slim Jim commercials and his voice with the catchphrase……………..Oooooooooooooooohhhhhhh Yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhh. In the world of professional wrestling during his era it was all about the big guys but he was able to outshine them all and in the process becoming one of the best ever. Whether it’s in-ring ability, promos, charisma or just the presence, he was the total package.

There were actually rumors of him maybe doing something with the WWE again which was sparked by his brother Lanny Poffo aka the Genius not too long ago but we’ll never get to see it because on Friday May 20, 2011 in Tampa, Florida it’s been said he had a heart attack while driving his Jeep and veered through a concrete median and head on to a tree, in which the injuries from the crash were fatal. He just celebrated his 1 year wedding anniversary and was said to be really happy with his new life. His wife was a passenger and she received minor injuries. He was 58 years old and will definitely be missed. Just want to say Rest In Peace “Macho Man” Randy Savage.
