Spring has sprung, and for many allergy sufferers that means watery eyes, runny noses, headaches, and coughing, wheezing, and even rashes. It doesn’t make for a pleasant time of year, but if you are one of the 1 in 5 adults in the United States, who suffers from allergies, know this: you are not alone, and there are things you can do to ease your allergy suffering. In addition to allergies, those who suffer from asthma (about 8% of the population) can also find some relief from these tips.
Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM) has been used for years by allergy and asthma patients, although there are very little studies done to show its effectiveness. People who have used them, however, swear by them. The following are just a few CAM procedures. Remember to always ask your doctor before trying any new medical procedure to ensure you won’t be doing more harm than good.
Acupuncture- This CAM procedure is gaining ground, quickly, and has been shown to alleviate asthma and allergies in adults when done by a professional. Even scientific studies (of which there are very few) have shown that acupuncture did show a better result than placebo pills, so there could be more to it than someone just believing it helped.
Butterbur- While there are many different herbs you can use to help alleviate asthma and allergies, this one is has been shown to be the best. In several studies, Butterbur was said to be the equivalent of both Zyrtec and Allegra.
Local honey- This one is an old wives’ tale that scientists are starting to see has some merit. Homeopathy is a new type of medicine that is really taking off, and the premise behind it is that the thing that makes you ill is the thing that can make you better. The idea is derived from vaccines. If you expose yourself to the thing that makes you sick, in small amounts, your body will develop a natural immunity. If you eat honey that is locally made, you will ingest traces of pollen from the flowers and trees in your area, thereby exposing yourself to the plants that cause your allergies. This will help you build an immunity to them, all while eating something that is good for you.
Ginger- Eating ginger can help reduce inflammation, which can make it easier for you to breathe. Best of all, ginger is also good for you and has a ton of vitamins and nutrients that your body needs.
Breathing techniques- For some people, breathing techniques can work in helping them to breathe through a mild asthma attack or even when their allergies make them feeling stuffy. One of the best is to sit upright, feet planted firmly on the ground in front of you and slightly apart. Then, take a deep breath in, hold it, lean over slowly to put your head between your knees, and then exhale. Return to a sitting position and repeat until you feel like you can breathe comfortable.
All those are fine, but there’s a much simpler solution and that the Holmes® Smart Air Purifier with WeMo technology.
