Porzingis Shipped to Dallas in Blockbuster Trade

While everyone in the NBA have been paying attention to Anthony Davis requesting a trade, we had a blockbuster take place. Kristaps Porzingis was a part of a 7-player trade that sent him to the Dallas Mavericks. New York also sent Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee. Dallas sent Dennis Smith Jr., Wesley Matthews, DeAndre Jordan and 2 future 1st round picks. Dennis Smith Jr. have been part of trade discussions for a while to the point the team had sent him home. The New York Knicks are hoping to attract two max players with cap space of around $71 million dollars. For Dallas, they’re hoping Porzingis return to form after his torn ACL to team with Luka.

Dallas Perspective

When it comes to Mark Cuban, you know he will aggressively pursue free agents. First off, he’ll need to resign Kristaps Porzingis to an extension. With Luka Doncic starting his rookie deal, the Mavericks will have money to go after talent to build around Doncic and Porzingis. Next year, Dallas could move the expiring contract to free up more money. Either way, Dallas should be able to build a talented team through free agency. Will the Mavericks be able to return to prominence in the next couple of years?

New York Perspective

This trade is all about the future for the New York Knicks. Dennis Smith Jr. will fit perfectly for what they’re doing as he’ll be able to be himself. New York is hoping to attract two max level players in this upcoming free agent class. Guys like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler and Kalyanji Thompson will be coveted free agents. The Knicks also have a chance to get the #1 pick and they’re hoping to get someone like Zion Williamson.

My Thoughts on Kristaps Porzingis

Porzingis is a unique talent and have an incredible future ahead of him. He’s a 7’3” guy who can hit the three, take you off the dribble and post you up also. There’s a reason why Kevin Durant started calling him the Unicorn. On the flip side, he’s had issues with staying healthy and that was before tearing his ACL. Seeing Porzingis was a part of some bad teams in New York, I’ll give him the benefit of doubt. Teaming with Luka Doncic will be beneficial for both and Mark Cuban will surround them with some guys that’ll help them win immediately.

Who do you think won this trade? Can the Knicks finally build a wonderful team? Will they attract top free agents? How will the Knicks look like next year? What do you think about this blockbuster trade? Leave your feedback below.
