When you think of self-care, you probably imagine a woman listening to music in a bubble bath, it hardly sounds like a manly activity. What self-care is actually about is giving you the opportunity to relax both physically and mentally. When you’re constantly surrounded by the stress of work, you probably can’t function properly. Coming home doesn’t help much, considering you’ll be surrounded by your screaming kids that crave attention. Finding some time for your hobbies and relaxation seems like an impossible mission. Taking care of yourself seems even further away. Fortunately, there are ways you can relax without taking up too much of your time.
1. Set aside some time for yourself
With all the responsibilities of work and family, it can be hard to find the time to focus on yourself. This can dissuade a lot of men from even trying to better themselves. A busy schedule is no excuse for not taking care of yourself. In order to get the most out of your day, you’re going to need some time to relax.
No matter how busy you are, you can set aside at least one hour a day for some kind of activity. It’s all a matter of organizing your schedule properly. You shouldn’t look at it as the time you could have spent being productive. Instead, consider it an investment in your health and productivity. Without proper rest, you can’t achieve anything.
2. Don’t neglect your skin
Skincare seems like one of those things you should leave to the ladies, but in reality, it’s important for everyone. It’s not like you don’t have a face to take care of. Our skin reflects overall health and maintaining it is good for your self-image and confidence.
Shaving can take its toll on any kind of skin, no matter how tough it is. Razors are irritating agents and you don’t want blemishes and cuts to appear on dry skin. Aftershave won’t be enough. You should consider some kind of moisturizing cream to help strengthen it, you’ll thank yourself later.
3. Cook something for yourself
Cooking is both an art and a passion in addition to being something of a necessity. It can get pretty tiresome if you’re used to cooking for your kids and family. You’ll mostly focus on nutrition and helping your family get ready for the day.
Whenever you find the time for it, make an interesting meal all to yourself. A light snack should do it. It doesn’t even have to be healthy, just use the opportunity to make something to reignite your cooking passion.
4. Make meditation your oasis
Stress is the ultimate killer. It’s not something that will attack you in the dead of night, but rather it’s something that will sneak up on you in the back of your head. It’s a self-imposed danger that needs to be regulated every once in a while.
Most people don’t see the point in meditation. For them, it’s either stretching or quietly sitting down on the floor. You would be surprised at what you can achieve with a serene and quiet trip to your mind. It’s all about being relaxed and having that inner peace for a few moments. It can be quite therapeutic.
5. Use physical activity as the ultimate self-care
There’s nothing quite like a bit of physical activity to blow off steam. Nowadays, people vouch for gyms as one of the best gateways towards physical and mental health. It’s not without reason, either. It’s pretty well-known that the right kind of regular physical activity helps your body relax while also putting you in a serene state of mind. However, you don’t have to work out in a stuffy gym to achieve this.
It would be much more enjoyable to combine physical activity with some fresh air. Take a short run through nature to absorb all that natural beauty. You could even have a run with your family. It would be a great bonding experience. Comfortable bicycles aren’t out of the question either. A nice ride on a sunny day is guaranteed to get your mind off of work.
6. Don’t let burnout set in
The modern man has to juggle a lot of things at once. Your family and work are the main priorities. You want to provide everything you can to your kids while still being present as much as possible. This can put you in a situation where you worry all the time and try to push yourself past your limits.
Take note of when you’re feeling unwell and try to mitigate that stress. If you’re always wiped out at the end of the day, how will you spend some quality time at home? Recognize the symptoms of burnout and try to apply some relaxation methods to help you cope with it.
Self-care isn’t just something you actively do to yourself. It would be much more accurate to consider it a kind of mental state. You have to be willing to make a change in order to practice self-care. Consider some of these tips and you will be on your way to having a much more care-free mentality during your day.
