Above the Rim Movie Soundtrack Turns 30 Years Old

In the 90s, whenever there was a new movie we anticipated the soundtrack just as much. The Above the Rim Soundtrack is one of those soundtracks that was amazing. Above the Rim was a sports drama starring 2Pac, Marlon Wayans, Duane Martin, and Leon. The soundtrack for the movie was handled by Death Row Records. Death Row Records was the biggest label during this time. In 1992, they released Dr. Dre’s The Chronic album, and we don’t need to talk about that joint and its impact. The following year, they dropped Snoop’s much anticipated debut Doggystyle. Like the Chronic, we don’t need to discuss the impact and how great Doggystyle was. The Above the Rim Soundtrack turns 30 years old today and it’s still regarded as one of the best soundtracks ever. If you love hip hop and R&B in the 90s then this is the one for you.

SWV, H-Town, Al B. Sure, Jewell and Aaron Hall represented the slow jams. 2Pac, Snoop, Dogg Pound, Warren G, and Treach from Naughty by Nature made appearances for the hip hop. The album shipped over two million copies and won the Soundtrack of the Year award at the 1995 Source Awards. Above the Rim was one of many classics that Death Row Records put out. Regulate was the first single from the album and it’s a certified classic record. Two million copies of the single were sold, and it set the tone for Warren G’s Regulate…. G Funk Era project. Regulate was also released through Def Jam, which is who Warren G was signed to and it became their biggest selling single. The track was nominated for some awards inkling Best Rap Performance by a Duo or group at the 1995 Grammys.

Afro Puffs was the second single from the soundtrack, and it was performed by Lady of Rage. While it wasn’t as successful as Regulate, this was another great track. This is my favorite movie soundtrack of all time. Above the Rim is one of those albums that you play from the beginning to the end. Usually, I’m picking my top 5 tracks from the album but not with this one because it’s impossible. This soundtrack finally made its way to streaming services and they also added the three tracks that were cassette only tracks. Check out the videos above for the tracks that had them.
