3 Tips for Getting Things Together When a Situation Is Spiraling Out Of Control

From time to time, things go wrong, and circumstances arise that can completely throw us off track and mess up our best plans and intentions. Of course, you can’t exactly plan and organize your life so that nothing ever goes wrong, or so that things never spiral out of control. But, there are definitely certain things you can do that can help to interrupt a downward spiral and get things back on track.

Here are a few tips for getting things together when a situation is spiraling out of control

Just focus on the next step; don’t preoccupy yourself too much with the whole process, all at once

If there’s some messy situation that you have to deal with, it can be easy to end up feeling totally overwhelmed and confused about how to handle things. A lot of that has to do with the fact that we often try to figure out the entire solution, in one go. Many times, the best thing to do is to just focus on the next step. Figure out a next action that would likely go some way to making things better, and then take that action.

In the case of a car accident, that might mean contacting a car wreck lawyer. In the case of a medical issue, it might mean arranging for some blood tests. Take things one step at a time, rather than allowing yourself to become overwhelmed, and you’ll generally be in a much better position when it comes to getting things back on track.

Take care of yourself, you are more effective and useful that way

Often, when things are spiraling out of control, we don’t do a very good job of taking care of ourselves. Specifically, our normal routines often get thrown straight out, we start eating garbage, stop sleeping enough, and start turning to negative and self-destructive coping mechanisms. Although you may not feel like it, you owe it to yourself and the people around you to take care of yourself in general, and especially when there are issues to confront. For one thing, you are far more likely to be effective and useful that way, when it comes to actually having the energy and presence of mind to deal with an issue. You will likely also be much better emotional support for your loved ones.

Get systematic, make a list of the things you need to do, and attack those challenges one at a time

If you know that things are going badly wrong in a particular area of your life, but you refuse to investigate the details, then your ability to actually correct course is going to be seriously diminished. When something seems to be contributing to a general downward spiral, look at it carefully, and make a list of all the things that you think, from your current perspective, you need to do in order to address that situation. This isn’t to say that you should get completely worked up and bogged down in trying to come up with the perfect solution, or that you should panic while trying to digest the “big picture.” Just that you should be systematic and organized.

Make a list of the things you need to do. Attack each one of those challenges, one at a time.
