Stress is a major risk for adults and has a negative impact on your health. If you’re overly stressed it can affect your performance at work, your personal relationships and your mood. It’s important to take a break to relax in an effective way, so that you can go back to it all with a little more perspective and energy. Here are five simple ways you can reduce stress and have more fun in your life.

1. Sport and exercise

This is a great way to get rid of pent up tension and energy. Exercise is also vital for your overall health, not only for those who want to lose weight or more professional athletes.  Sport can also be a fun way to make new friends which will also improve your mood and general well being. Which type of sports do you prefer? If you’re into team sports you could join a club at your local community center or if you prefer to do something individually you could try out yoga or Pilates class. These are particularly good for young to middle aged men with back problems. For those of you more disciplined and who want to improve a new skill, join a martial arts class. If you find it difficult to motivate yourself it’s a good idea to set a goal, for example a half-marathon in six months’ time, to encourage you to get out there running.

2. You time

Sometimes it’s necessary to get away from it all and just enjoy your own company. Consider going out to the movies or for dinner alone. You could even switch off your phone and go off the grid for a bit. Go somewhere quiet for a walk and reflect. This will give you the strength and perspective to go back to your hectic lifestyle and make you better able to deal with other people. Many people now are practicing the art of mindfulness which involves a lot of meditation and regaining control of your thoughts. Also, don’t forget to treat yourself a little bit from time to time as well.

3. Get a new hobby

There are many cool new hobbies you can try, aside from sport that will improve your mental wellbeing. Why not start collecting something you’ve always been interested in? This can be very rewarding. Whether you find a new vintage record, or a 3801 train, adding something new to your collection can be very satisfying.

4. Eat and sleep well

Look into your lifestyle habits and how you can change them for the better. Sleep. Don’t let your other responsibilities affect your sleep pattern; your health is more important. Have fun with food and cooking, get to know some new and easy recipes and make them with friends of family.

5. Take a trip

Even if it’s just for the day, head out into the countryside. You could go out cycling on your own or with some friends to discover a hidden gem near you.
