It’s a Dirty Job… the Common Toilet Problems You Can Fix!

Some dads think they should know everything about DIY, but if your DIY list is getting longer than your arm, it’s time to know about some of the basics that will keep your home ticking over. One of the most common issues in any home is fixing the toilet. And if you can fix some of the most widespread toilet problems, you will be flying! Here are some of the most common issues that you need to know how to fix.

Replacing the Ballcock

The ballcock is the refill valve, which is the hollow floating ball that operates the valve which controls the water. You don’t see them in newer toilets, but they are present in older models. You will usually find an issue with water constantly flowing into the toilets, which usually points towards an issue with the ballcock. If the toilet continues to run after flushing, this could also mean the water level is too high in the tank. You can replace it with a modern fill valve, and it is an easy DIY project. Many providers like Mark’s Plumbing Parts offer many replacement items.

Sorting a Running Toilet

When the toilet runs constantly this is an easy fix to one of the most common problems. The problem usually occurs either because the flapper is not positioned correctly in the opening of the flush valve, or the water level in the tank is too high, which causes water to flow over the top of the overflow tube. But the problem is easy to fix. Every refill valve has a way to adjust the water level, and flapper valves can be replaced or adjusted.

Fixing the Flush Valve

The flush valve is made of plastic or brass and is attached to the bottom opening of the tank. When the handle is depressed, the flapper is lifted by a chain or wire, and you can either fix the chain if it is loose, or replace the vertical overflow tube that extends into the tank from the bottom of the flush valve, this restores the level of water in the toilet bowl, and keeping the trap sealed.

Leaks at the Toilet Base

It’s important to remember that when water seeps out around the base of the toilet along the floor, this is usually because of problems with the wax ring that seals the bottom of the toilet to the drain opening into the floor. This may seem like an overwhelming job, but you can remove the toilet and replace the wax ring rather than calling a plumber.

Unclogging the Toilet

The most common problem with any toilet is the dreaded clogging. You may think that you need to call a specialist, but if a plunger doesn’t do the job, you may need to upgrade to a special plunger with an internal cup, or a special drain snake tool, usually called a toilet auger.

You should never feel like you are incapable of doing any DIY jobs. When it comes to the toilet, it’s something that everybody uses every day, so we should be knowledgeable enough to do it ourselves.
