5 Tips on How to Create a Sustainable Wardrobe

Today’s environmental problems call for serious solutions. One of these big problems is fashion: the industry uses an enormous number of resources and energy every single day. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any solutions to fix the problem.

Smaller steps towards the greater good can help in protecting Mother Earth. For instance, you may change your shopping habits and invest in sustainable fashion choices.

What is Sustainable Fashion?

Sustainable fashion is a movement and process which fosters change to fashion products and fashion systems towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion is more than being concerned over fashion textiles or products; it comprises addressing the whole fashion system.

Sustainable clothing is not just about what you wear, but about how you wear it, how often you wear and how you care for it. The good news is that there are easy ways to be sustainable with your wardrobe and make more eco-friendly choices! Many brands are coming up with sustainable sweaters, t-shirts, dresses, and more. So, you do have a lot of options to participate in making a difference.

4 Tips to Make Your Wardrobe Sustainable

There are many ways you can make your wardrobe more sustainable, but here are a few of our favorite simple tweaks:

1. Buy Less

One of the best ways to reduce your impact on the environment is buying and wearing less clothing. Before you go shopping, take some time to consider how many times you’ll wear something before it goes out of style, gets stained or ripped, or simply falls apart. It may be tempting to buy those trendy jeans that are 50 percent off, but if they don’t fit you well and will rip after one wash, why spend money on them? Look for quality pieces that will last longer and are easier to care for.

2. Buy From Thrift Stores

The first and most obvious way to buy more sustainably is purchasing used clothes. The fashion industry is the second-largest polluter globally, so buying used is a huge help. There are many thrift stores that you can find online on social media platforms, and so on. It is time for people to understand the importance of thrifting and its sustainability for society. Also, on a side note, thrift clothes are cool!

3. Shop From Locally-Owned Boutiques

We know shopping local can be challenging because it’s usually more expensive, but supporting small businesses is much better for sustainability than shopping at large corporations. These boutiques tend to carry higher quality clothing that will last you longer than fast fashion brands that wear out after a couple of years. Plus, boutique owners tend to care more about their customers’ satisfaction than large companies. If you’re hoping to find cheap used clothes, though, we would recommend sticking with thrift stores.

4. Choose Natural Fabrics

The best way to start your sustainable wardrobe is by choosing clothes made of natural materials like linen, wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, which are petroleum-based and don’t biodegrade quickly (and who wants to wear plastic?)

In a Nutshell

Saving the environment is no small task, but it can start with our buying choices. The clothing we wear touches every aspect of our lives, from our health to the health of the planet itself. With these tips and a bit of effort, we can save energy, reduce waste, and live in a healthier world.
