A Home Maintenance Checklist for Dads

Dads, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work on some much-needed home maintenance projects! By undertaking these projects once a year, you can help keep your home in good condition and avoid costly repairs down the road. Here are four projects that every dad should add to his annual to-do list.

A Home Maintenance Checklist for Dads

#1 Clean the gutters

Clogged gutters can lead to water damage on your home’s roof and siding, so it’s important to clean them out regularly. Use a ladder to reach the gutters and be sure to wear gloves and safety goggles for protection. Use a garden trowel or your hands to remove leaves and debris, then rinse the gutters with a hose.

In addition, check the downspouts to make sure they are clear and free of obstructions. If you notice any damage to your gutters, call a professional for repairs. If there are any trees nearby, be sure to trim the branches back, so they don’t interfere with the gutters.

#2 Inspect the roof

The roof is one of the most important parts of your home, and it’s also one of the most expensive to repair. Inspect it for damage every year and fix any problems you find as soon as possible. If you have a chimney, be sure to check that its cap is in good condition and hasn’t been damaged by severe weather. Repair or replace as necessary.

Also, make sure all your roof vents are clear and not blocked by snow or leaves. Blocked vents can cause moisture damage and increase your energy bills. Finally, check the flashing around your roof’s edges for cracks or other damage. If you find any, have them fixed right away to prevent water from seeping into your home.

#3 Service your HVAC system

Your heating-and-cooling system works hard to keep your home comfortable all year long, so it’s important to give it a little TLC from time to time. First, schedule a professional inspection from Air Duct Doctors as well as a cleaning of your furnace and air conditioner at least once a year. This will help them run more efficiently and prevent breakdowns.

While you’re at it, take a look at your home’s ductwork. Check for leaks or holes and have them sealed up by a professional if necessary. Also, be sure to change the air filter on your HVAC system regularly – at least every three months – to ensure optimal performance.

#4 Check for pests

Pests can cause all sorts of problems in your home, from damaging your property to making your family sick. So, it’s important to inspect regularly and take steps to prevent them from taking up residence in your home. Start by checking the exterior of your home for any gaps or holes that could be used as an entry point. Be sure to caulk or seal up any cracks you find. In addition, trim back any trees or bushes that are touching your house, as this provides a path for pests to get inside.

Also, check the inside of your home – especially kitchens and bathrooms – for signs of pests such as droppings or gnawed food packaging. If you do spot any pests, call a professional for extermination immediately.

By completing these modest home maintenance projects every year, you can help keep your home in good condition and avoid costly repairs down the road. So, get to work, dads! Your home will thank you for it.
