The Iconic Album Doggystyle Turns 25

The Iconic Album Doggystyle Turns 25

There are a couple of handful of albums that’s mentioned when you’re talking about all-time classic hip hop records. Death Row is my all-time favorite label and they have four of those albums mentioned. The Chronic, All Eyez on Me, Makaveli and the one that’s featured now. Doggystyle was one of the most anticipated albums ever after the success of the Chronic record. Snoop Dogg had one of a kind flow and voice when he was introduced to the world on the Deep Cover track. After the release of the Chronic, everyone couldn’t wait until Snoop dropped a solo project. 25 years ago today, Snoop Dogg released his debut album, Doggystyle. After its release, Snoop would sell over 800,000 records during the first week. Doggystyle has gone on to sell well over 7 million copies in the United States and over 11 worldwide.

Damn near every publication that’s heavily involved in music have listed Doggystyle as one of the great rap albums ever. Snoop’s style would later be called G-Funk, which was popular throughout the 90s. Anything from Snoop was anticipated so much, the exact time and date was announced on MTV when his first single would drop. What’s My Name debuted on October 30th and I remember several of my friends gathering over my house to check it out. It reminded me of people getting together to watch an episode of Martin or the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. At the beginning of 1994, Snoop Dogg released the video for Gin & Juice which was dope. During the summer of 1994, Snoop Dogg dropped another classic video with his Doggy Dogg World track. The entire album gets played from the beginning to the end without skipping a track.

Doggystyle is easily one of the best hip hop records I’ve ever heard and should be in your collection. Ever since its release, Snoop Dogg has gone on to become one of the most popular rappers ever. Snoop has released several albums, including a gospel project and one of the funnier dudes on Instagram. Peep the track listing below, check it out on Apple Music or listen to it under the listing. This album has a couple different versions with some additional songs like Gz Up, Hoes Down. It was rumored the album was rushed because the demand was so high. Recently, Snoop Dogg was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
