Kanye West Late Registration Turns 15 Years Old Today

The Late Registration from Kanye West turns 15-years-old today. Late Registration is the follow-up to his debut album, College Dropout he released a year prior. With College Dropout being such a great album, expectations were high for this one. Late Registration went on to sell over 3 million copies off the strength of 5 singles. Diamonds from Sierra Leone was the first one and it was a dope track. Diamond from Sierra Leone went on to go platinum after its release. The track was so good that Jay-Z jumped on the remix and it also appeared on the album. Diamonds from Sierra Leone won the Grammy Award for Best Rap song. For the second single, Kanye West grabbed Jamie Foxx for the chorus and the track was called Gold Digger. Gold Digger went on to sell over 3 million copies and was nominated and won countless awards.

In the fall of 2005, Kanye featured Adam Levine for his third single, Heard Em’ Say. Heard Em’ Say didn’t reach the level of the previous singles, but it was just as good. Touch the Sky was the fourth single and it introduced the world to a young spitter by the name of Lupe Fiasco. Touch the Sky also went gold, but the verse from Fiasco is considered as one of the dopest. It had hip hop heads wanting to hear more from him like Nas on Live at the BBQ. Kanye hit the jackpot again with his fourth single that dropped in early 2006. The fifth and final single off Late Registration featured the underrated Houston spitter, Paul Wall. Drive Slow was the name and it also appeared on Paul Wall’s debut album, The People’s Champ. The track had both of them deliver and it pushed Paul Wall harder.

With the buzz Paul Wall had in Houston and then appearing on the track with Kanye, we wanted the album. Earlier in the year, Paul Wall appeared with Mike Jones and Slim Thug on the classic Still Tippin’. Late Registration is probably my favorite album from Kanye West. You should have this classic in your collection and remember the old Kanye. Kanye has been in the news lately for a lot of crazy stuff as he’s attempting to run for President.
